It’s a place where friendships are made, skills are shared, and wellbeing is supported – all in a relaxed and formal environment
A men’s shed is a community space for men to connect, converse and create. Whether you enjoy woodworking, metalwork, fixing things, or just a good chat over a cuppa, the shed welcomes men of all ages and backgrounds.
The Jarvis Brook Men’s Shed (JBMS) is established with the aim to provide a welcoming and socially secure environment for men who find it difficult to build social connections following retirement, bereavement or other situations, where they can share skills and forge new friendships.
The shed encourages physical and mental activities to increase health benefits and an improved wellbeing, by providing an enjoyable way to stay socially integrated in the local community by being actively creative and learning or passing on skills.
Values
The shed is open to people from all walks of life, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Our activity environment can create a place of belonging, when mutual respect and companionship become engrained in the behaviour of all Jarvis Brook shedders.
Health & Safety
To ensure that Shedders return home in the same good physical state they came in, the JBMS puts emphasis on a safe and healthy work environment with all necessary H&S provisions. Shedders will be encouraged to share their accumulated and varied expertise, and to allow participation safely for all within the limits of their ability. Where necessary, training and instruction regarding the use of tools and equipment will be verified or organised.
Integration and development
In this environment there should be opportunities for learning and improving basic skills. In addition, through potential volunteering and community service we aim to increase confidence and self-worth at the same time as mitigating the effects of isolation, loneliness and exclusion
Community
The shed aims to collaborate with other local, likeminded charities and organisations. This to share ideas and offer support in joint charitable missions.
